If “they” leave you, let them… (Read Time: 3 min.)

srts-blog-post-72“They”… Who are “they” anyway?  Even though we don’t seem to be able to answer that question, there are a lot of “they” who seem to be keeping us connected to situations, experiences, and drama that we really don’t need… and you’d think the situation would improve when “they” leave our lives… Quite the contrary.

For many overachieving, highly successful, driven women entrepreneurs, being left feels like a slap in the face, a failure of sorts, something that they don’t know how to rationalize or recover from.

So what do you do when you’ve been left (by a client, fired from a job, walked out on by a spouse, abandoned by a friend, rejected by a family member) physically but are still holding onto the situation emotionally and spiritually?

How do you let go when everything inside you keeps fighting to hold on?

Here’s what you do:

Give me a minute here…

There are 3 things about this concept that you want to take hold of:

  1. What’s for you won’t pass you by.  If that client, job, career, or relationship had REALLY been for you, it would’ve stayed and it would’ve produced good fruit.  Anything that stays in your life but brings you down or leaves your life and leaves you feeling low is NOT something that is meant for you.  When you truly get this understanding, you allow things to be what they are without feeling the need to push boulders uphill or go kicking and screaming into the night.  You love what is, you accept what is and, as things unfold, you embrace the adventure of it.  That doesn’t mean the pain goes away; it simply means you’re unwilling to magnify it.
  2. Go with the season you’re in.  There are seasons and reasons to everything.  Rather than fighting the season you’re in, flow with it.  Allow there to be the natural ups and downs that come with life.  Embrace them.  Remember: you NEVER have to chase what’s for you.  It will come on its own.  What’s not for you will leave on its own.  You don’t have to control anything to usher in what’s for you.  You do, however, have to be open and aware of what season you’re in.  Be present in THIS season and allow it to unfold as it needs to.  The key here is trust: trust in yourself, trust in the process, and trust in the timing of your life.  If you don’t have trust, you will cling and grasp and lose everything you are trying to hold onto…
  3. You won’t get more until you stop giving space to less.  There will be no room in your life to receive what you REALLY want if you continue to hold onto the things, people, and experiences that are far below what you deserve.  The scarcity associated with clinging to anything because you’re afraid of having nothing is a painful way to live.  The second you begin to trust and know that better is ALWAYS on its way is the second you start to let things go with ease.  Why?  Because you understand it takes the act of faith of opening up space in your life to receive and embrace better in your world.  #BOOM

How to be Relentless: 3 Steps to Laser Focused, Fast Implementation, All the Time (Read Time: 6 min.)

I have… on quite a few things.

And one area where I do the least wiffle-waffling is my business.

Why?

Because entrepreneurial success only happens when you apply RELENTLESS, persistent, consistent focus to a small number of things over a LONG period of time.

And most aspiring entrepreneurs stay “aspiring” because they do the opposite.  They focus on every Shiny Object that comes their way (thus the term Shiny Object Syndrome, aka SOS) and then wonder why not one of their “projects” have taken off.

Here’s the thing:

Successful people make decisions quickly and change their minds slowly.  If what you want is long term business success, you’ve got to get very clear (very fast) on what business activities will achieve the results you seek and be willing to stay the course UNTIL they do…

If you struggle with making big business decisions and sticking to the path, here are 3 steps to laser focused, fast implementation all the time:

STEP 1: Identify 3 revenue streams (1 long term, 2 short term)

One revenue stream in your business (example: being a life coach who only sees clients 1:1) is the same thing as having a job.  When your livelihood is based solely on one source of income, you commit a deadly sin of business that James Altucher writes about in his post 10 Reasons You Have to Quit Your Job This Year:

“I don’t like it when one person can make or break me.  A boss.  A publisher.  A TV producer.  A buyer of my company.  At any one point I’ve had to kiss ass to all of the above.  I hate it.  I will never do it again.”

You  might think you don’t have enough time to create three streams of revenue in your brand new business.  Guess what?  You don’t have time NOT to…

Here’s the reality: 

If you give one target market the power to feed you, you also give them the power to starve you.  Don’t set up your business that way.  Instead, identify 3 revenue streams (preferably a long term revenue stream plus two faster returning, short term revenue streams) that can bring money into your business.  Choose revenue streams that are scalable (i.e. don’t require you trading hours for dollars).

For example, my 3 revenue streams are:

  1. ebooks on Amazon (You can find my books at http://www.overcomingfearbooks.com)
  2. Online courses (Fear to Power Course)
  3. Voiceover work

The online courses are my long term revenue stream while writing ebooks on Amazon and doing voiceover work provides faster cash in shorter intervals.

Yes, you’re building an empire.  Support the process with immediate, consistent cash flow.

STEP 2: Time block your business activities based on priority. 

Sales activities come first… always.

Notice I didn’t say ‘networking events.’  Unless an activity has or is generating revenue in your business, it doesn’t need to be the thing that you do at your peak time of the day.  Whether you’re a morning or a night person, whatever time of day you’re in peak state needs to be the time of day you do sales.

What if you don’t have a product or service to sell?

You still have an email list to build and you need to start getting people onto that list (so selling is the key).

Product creation time needs to be blocked off and protected (i.e. no distractions, cellphones, grocery store trips, or walks on the beach).  Use a 60-20-60 approach (credit goes to Peter Voogd who outlines this in his book Six Months to Six Figures) where you work for 60 minutes, take a 20 minute break and do something else and then work for 60 more minutes.

STEP 3: Focus on the next 3 steps (and nothing else)

What are the next three simple, strategic steps you can take in your business to achieve your goals?  Write them down and don’t consider anything else for your To-Do list until those are done.

At the end of the day, being relentlessly focused is super simple but not necessarily easy.  It’s about being able to say a lot of Nos so you can get to an extraordinary YES.

You don’t need to be perfect to get it right but you do need to be consistent.  The focus you have will always be the focus you choose.

How to Apply The 5 Gifts of Heartbreak to Your Business (Read Time: 5 min.)

Kass Cry 1bAfter a recent heartbreak, I took this picture.  Look at it closely.  In my eyes you can see the loss, the pain, and emptiness.  I recovered from that heartbreak as I’d done from many others: a little bit wiser, a lot stronger, and definitely less trusting.

I’ve experienced the loss of love many times.  It started with my dad and never quite shifted form.  I guess that’s what happens when you allow childhood wounds to define your concept of “love.”  I’m working on that…

Until recently, I thought love was THE thing… not “a” thing or “some thing” but THE thing… the defining moment, the required experience, the ultimate accomplishment… and then love left again…

And, since then, I’ve had to ask myself, “When love leaves, what’s left of me?”  As much as I’ve read the books, attended the workshops and devoured the subject, it’s a question that hit me in the gut as I cried myself to sleep.

And here’s the answer that came:

“Everyone falls in love sometimes
Sometimes it’s wrong, and sometimes it’s right
For every win, someone must fail
But there comes a point when
When we exhale” – Whitney Houston, Exhale

The lyrics from a song of one of my favorite movies, a movie that inspired me to write my first screenplay, rediscover my love of acting and, eventually, leave the marriage that was draining the life out of me.  So many monumental moments from one song… and here it was again to teach me the things I didn’t want to learn…

So the question becomes: when your heart breaks and you’ve still got a business to run, how do you transform the feelings of grief, loss, pain, and loneliness into something that fuels the empire you’re building?

Here’s the answer…

You embrace the 5 gifts of heartbreak and you apply them to your business.

Gift #1- Surrender

Heartbreak breaks  you open.  It forces you to let go of things that you don’t want to let go of, to face emotions you don’t want to face, to simplify life in a way that’s not about what you HAVE to have but becomes about what you long to create.  You go from being someone anxious to succeed to being someone who simply wants to take a deep breath and feel at peace.  When your heart breaks, you accept the fact that very few things go according to plan and you begin, once again, to go with the flow… and that’s when magic starts to happen in your business.  No longer confined to goals, plans, strategies, and revenue models, you now operate from a softer, more intuitive place and your business begins to succeed in a different way, not because you’re not as driven but because you understand that it’s trust in yourself that drives your business, not in any plan or strategy you come up with.  Nothing teaches you that better than heartbreak.

Gift #2- Freedom

In relationships, we do all kinds of things we NEVER do outside of them.  We accept things we shouldn’t accept.  We tolerate things we shouldn’t tolerate.  We go silent when it’s time to speak and talk about things we don’t agree with.  We compromise and accept and prove all because we don’t want love to leave… never fully getting that the second we lost ourselves, love was out the door anyway.  When heartbreak comes, the freedom to be who you REALLY are returns… and now you can go into your business full throttle because the REAL you is finally back in the building.  While there are moments where loneliness creeps in, what really shows up with this freedom is an understanding you refused to see when in the relationship: you NEVER have to be someone else for someone who really loves you.  Your newfound freedom gives you full opportunity for you to love YOU… and that’s when the business starts to pick up speed.

Gift #3- Purpose

It’s so easy to get your value and purpose from a relationship.  When your heart gets broken, you can no longer define yourself by being with someone else.  You can no longer live your life based on an “us” or a “we.”  That’s gone now.  In the wake of that loss, you now have to look yourself in the eyes and say, “What is MY purpose?  What am I really about?  Who am I meant to be?”  Those questions can get easily cast aside in a relationship.  Far too often, especially as women, we give up the “I” for the “we” and while that’s noble and glorious and, in some cases, necessary, there’s a lot to lose when you no longer recall who you are or what you want or what God put you here to do.  When heartbreak happens, you finally have enough space and distance to ask and answer the question, “Who did I come here to serve?” and, with full faith and freedom, you now have the extraordinary opportunity and time to serve them.  Purpose, in many instances, is born of heartbreak.  Especially in business, if you can nail down your purpose, you can prosper your business.

Gift #4- Focus

Now that you’re not catering to another person, now that you’re not doing the “How should we… what should we… could we…” compromising thing, you are free to focus completely and totally on the desiring, creating, and offering components that come with running a business.  Not only is it freeing but it’s exciting to be able to give everything you’ve got to your business without the worry of who you need to consider or factor into the equation.  After a heartbreak, you get to put all of your focus into building YOUR empire.  All those times you wished you’d spent more time on your business?  All those moments you said to yourself, “Geez, I really have to get focused and create that product!”?  Guess what?  You now have all the time you need to focus and deliver.  Cherish the gift you’ve been given by using it…

Gift #5- Hope

Heartbreak is a beautiful message of hope when you really understand what it’s saying.  When your heart breaks, it’s life’s way of saying to you “There’s more for you and it’s not here.  Keep looking and you’ll find it… There are gifts for you in this and you can have them right now.  Embrace it… You were built to experience greater things than what you did in this relationship.  Own the fact that you deserve MORE…” and, then, the moment you begin to own your worth and your value and the fact that you deserve MORE, you start to live that way inside AND outside of your business.

You stop settling for clients you don’t want and projects you hate to have to work on and tasks in your business that you should’ve outsourced to a virtual assistant YEARS ago.  You stop doing what doesn’t work for you.  You stop accepting less than you deserve and your business starts to grow in new and exciting ways… because you are growing in new and exciting ways.  It’s an evolution that could not have occurred as fast or as completely without the heartbreak.  You needed the pain to get the point.  Hope helps you understand that EVERYTHING happens FOR you, not to you.  It is your choice to grow and flourish… and hope helps you choose growth…

The 5 gifts of heartbreak have the power to build your business to heights you cannot imagine.  When heartbreak happens to you, don’t turn away from it or make excuses about it or get angry because it’s happening again.  Embrace the experience.  Learn from the process.  Feel your way to healing and, as you do all of that, continue to put your passion, purpose and desire into every business activity you do.

Your business does not need a break because you had a breakup.  In fact, it is right after a breakup that your business requires MORE of you, the REAL you that is now showing up because you’ve been broken open, broken free, and broken to the point of restoration.  Give yourself the room and the space to fully show up in your business and, more importantly, to fully show up for YOU.

That was the point of the heartbreak.  It is your gift AND your lesson.  Accept them both…

I Chose Us But You Chose You: How Women Entrepreneurs Deal With Infidelity (Read Time: 3 min.)

Unsplash 1I knew it was coming… For years, the writing had been on the wall…

You know exactly who I’m talking about: Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick…

Yes, the Kardashians… and everyone could see the writing on the wall: Kourtney’s the stability, the security, the breadwinner, and the power entrepreneur.  Scott’s the younger, inept, aimless, addiction-prone partner who is clearly less ambitious, seriously suffering from an inferiority complex, and blatantly unhappy in the relationship… and now he’s been caught cheating.

I’m sad for the children.

I’m angered by the absolute disrespect.

I’m floored by the blatant disregard one person can have for his entire family…

And I’m heartbroken by the fact that Kourtney, as a woman entrepreneur who’s the breadwinner, is not the only woman entrepreneur going through something like this…

Just because her dirty laundry is on blast everywhere doesn’t mean she’s the only one.  There are far too many women entrepreneurs who have successful business lives but, at home, they are desperately waiting… to… exhale…

And it’s time that these powerful women entrepreneurs stopped the madness and did the one thing they’re afraid to do (the one thing Kourtney Kardashian is doing right now): begin again…

We’re so afraid to start over.  So afraid to begin again.  The fear is so great, in fact, that we’ll settle for less than what we deserve, hide behind facades that were never real, and pretend like everything’s great when nothing is.  It’s time to get real and get moving.  Starting over is tough but staying in a hopeless, heartless situation is even tougher.

If someone isn’t treating you right, it’s time to go.  If a situation (business or pleasure) doesn’t feel right, spend no time deliberating your intuition.  Listen and take action.  If you’re feeling lukewarm in your life and numb in your relationships, there’s some truth that you aren’t willing to look at.

And, if you’re in a Kourtney/Scott dead-end relationship that you know wasn’t built for you, it’s time to start over.  Don’t wait.  Don’t debate.  Let it go and get back to yourself… I know it’ll be tough (been there).  I know divorce is never fun (lived it).  I get that you, as the “successful” partner, may have so much to lose (emotionally, financially, etc.) but, if you stay, you have way more to lose that you can’t ever get back.

There is no amount of money that can buy back your self-respect, self-esteem and self-worth.  Nothing is worth losing your soul.

3 Ways to Redefine Rest (Read Time: 3 min.)

Woman sleeping on sofaThe last week has been challenging… Did I say CHALLENGING?  Between going on a nutrition cleanse and starting a new round of fertility treatments, my gung-ho, 24/7 entrepreneurial efforts were completely thwarted.  Fast forward to today, Sunday, and it’s a struggle writing this blog post… which has led me to two epiphanies:

1) I don’t do REST well.

2) I don’t know how to feel like an entrepreneur when rest is my only option.

And I’m sure I’m not the only one… As women entrepreneurs with so many responsibilities, it can be so easy to work too much and rest too little… until our bodies force us to do so and, by then, it’s too late to create harmony between work and rest; rest has become doctor’s orders.  So I’m using this new rest lesson to learn how to redefine rest.

Here are 3 ways I’m redefining rest:

1) Rest is a choice I can make (rather than an ultimatum I have to take).

2) Rest IS temporary.  This is a critical one for me.  Every time my body demands rest, I worry that the specific demand will become a permanent requirement.  It’s hard to invite over a guest you don’t think will leave.  I’m working on this one.

3) Rest is necessary to success.  Action feels and looks better.  It more logically fits into the timeline of success.  However, there’s a time for work and a time for rest.  I’m still learning how to fit rest into the equation.

At the end of the day, the ability to rest is a personal choice that we, as women entrepreneurs, can make.  The first way to choose rest comes in redefining how we see, understand and feel about rest.  I’m working on it…

5 MUST HAVE apps for Women Entrepreneurs (Read Time: 3 min.)

 

hustle 2Apps… Ten years ago, that word wouldn’t have even registered for most of us.  And, yet, here we are in smartphone heaven with every app imaginable.

If you’re a busy entrepreneur like me, you don’t have time to surf Google Play or iTunes to figure out what the best apps for running your business are so let’s take a shortcut and go over the 5 MUST HAVE apps for women entrepreneurs.  Keep in mind two things: 1) Apps like gmail and Facebook aren’t included in this list.  Everybody has them and they’re basic, and 2) The apps are listed in no particular order and they are FREE to download.

APP #1: Evernote

Evernote is quickly becoming the Microsoft Office of apps.  You can do everything from sketch to text to create voice notes to collaborate in REAL time with others on a particular Evernote document.  It’s a powerful tool to have at the press of a smartphone button when you want to jot down ideas, create To-Do lists (love the little checkbox bullet points that you can actually check off), and collaborate on projects with others who also have access to Evernote.  For example, you can create a checklist for your Virtual Assistant (VA), put it in Evernote, update it while you’re at the grocery store and, within seconds, your VA has the updated note.  It’s a powerful tool that’s worth paying the premium monthly charge for ($5/month for premium individual users and $10/month per user for teams/business).  Check out Evernote at http://www.Evernote.com.

APP #2: Toggl

For those of you who hate to keep track of your time (but REALLY want to know at the end of each week whether you’re making good use of your time), Toggl is the way to go.  Toggl is a free time tracker software that allows you to break up your time into projects so you can see where your time is being spent.  At the end of each week, you can pull a summary report to see where your time is being spent.  The toggl app is totally useful when you want to track time on the go.  And when you forget to stop your timer, Toggl sends you an email letting you know that Toggl’s still running.  Very cool way to track time!  Visit Toggl at http://www.toggl.com.

APP #3: MyFitnessPal

Being an entrepreneur requires a serious amount of time.  It’s easy to forget to eat or workout when you’re working 24/7.  However, not eating healthy and not working out will stamp an expiration date on your body that your business does not need.  MyFitnessPal allows you the room to log your food and your workouts AND see your daily nutrition totals, all from a smartphone, computer, or tablet.  It’s the easiest way to keep track of what you’re eating and how you’re moving.  Throw your food journal away and use MyFitnessPal.

APP #4: Instagram

Instagram is today what Twitter was in 2007.  It’s growing by leaps and bounds and entrepreneurs are building followings and clients from Instagram alone.  Capture your breakfast, a beautiful sun rise, or a night out with friends on your smartphone and share it with your tribe on Instagram.  It’s that easy.  Be sure to follow me on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/kassandrabibas.

APP #5: WhatsApp

The Top 3 Beliefs That Are Sabotaging Your Business (Read Time: 4 min.)

If you want to know what your CORE beliefs are about your business, look at your business results.  That’s a hard statement to take, isn’t it?

The reality of core beliefs is that, for many of us, we’re not even clear about what it is we REALLY believe.  For a lot of us, it is our limiting beliefs that drive our businesses and not the beliefs we “hope” we’re holding.  The first step to changing core beliefs comes in identifying what beliefs are running your show.  The only way to do that is to take some time to get real with where you are in your business, the limitations you’ve put on your business model and what it is you “think” you MUST do in order to be successful.  When you get down to the core of those things, the sabotaging beliefs become clear.

To avoid spending weeks in analysis paralysis, let’s talk about the top 3 beliefs that are sabotaging your business/business model (and by business model, I mean the approach you’re taking to build your business- examples: 1:1 work with clients, membership site, online or digital product, group coaching program, etc.).

LIMITING BELIEF #1: The way I’m currently running my business is the BEST AND MOST EFFICIENT WAY for me to make money.

Buying into a specific way to do business WITHOUT fully investigating the options is a surefire way to extend the amount of time it’s going to take for you to get to maximum profitability.  There are always going to be fads in business models, sales funnels and marketing approaches.  Teleseminars used to be THE thing; now the thing are under the helm of webinars.  Twitter was THE place to connect; now it’s Facebook.  You can attend every free training out there and here each of the “experts” tell you the “BEST” way to make money fast and, before long, you’ll be totally confused and completely overwhelmed.

The BEST AND MOST EFFICIENT way for you to monetize your business is going to come down to 3 things:

1) Your current skillset (i.e. your strengths, experience, and where your marketing/sales talents lie right now).

2) Your current resources (both material and human).

3) What your target market needs and how they can best receive what they need.

Your target market might not like webinars so why use them?  Your target market may not be watching YouTube videos so why spend thousands on a camera crew and lighting?  Your target market might not even know what group coaching is so why develop a year long group coaching program?

Before you get overly committed to ONE WAY of doing business, be sure that you’ve assessed the needs of your target market, your skillset, and the extent to which you can tap into the resources necessary to run your business in that way with efficiency and excellence.  And be willing to change your mind on that in the future.  Like I said, teleseminars were the rave two years ago.  Now it’s webinars.  You have to be willing to flex and flow with your business model.  Getting overly committed to any one strategy will lead to inflexibility, outdated thinking, and a lack of sales.

LIMITING BELIEF #2: Taking ANY client is better than having NO clients.

Working with any client is going to take time and energy from you.  You’re investing in them as much (and more) than they are investing in you.  There’s a serious temptation, at the start of a business, to want to take ANY client just to say you have a client (or to earn a few bucks).  Not a good idea… When you take on a client who’s really not your client, the level of negativity, drama, hassle and pain they bring will end up costing you 200% more than whatever amount of money they paid you… and, when all is said and done, your client will still be who NOT for you and you will have lost valuable time, energy, and opportunity that could’ve been spent with another client who you’d want to work with again in the future.

Bottom line:

Get good at firing clients that aren’t yours and rejecting clients who do not fit your client profile.  

Money will come but your energy doesn’t need to be sucked up by a client that really isn’t meant for you.

LIMITING BELIEF #3: I have to offer my product/service at a cheaper rate because I’m not as established as other people in my industry.

This gets new entrepreneurs EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Stop it!  Even if you’re new to your business, step back for a moment and assess how many YEARS you’ve spent using the skills, talents, gifts and abilities that are central to your business.

What’s your professional background?  

Educational background?  

How many years did it take you to get that degree?  That certification?  

How many family members, friends, and associates have you helped with these exact problems (even if you didn’t get paid for it)?  

How many books have you read on this topic in your business that you can now quote line by line?  

The reality is this: most new entrepreneurs are an expert IN their business but a novice in how to run a business.  You’re charging based on your expertise IN the business so charge what you’re worth.  Really assess the value that you’re offering and be sure to charge what you would charge five years into your business.  Why?  Because customers have a hard time adjusting to super high price hikes.  If you introduce your business with bargain basement prices now and then try to go to a price point worthy of your product in 6 months or a year, your customer base will revolt.  Don’t make that mistake.  Charge what you’re worth the FIRST time around.

Okay, so you now have the top 3 beliefs that are sabotaging your business model.

Here are 3 things you can do to change those beliefs:

1) Write down 3 new beliefs to replace these 3 limiting beliefs.  For example, limiting belief #1 could easily become, “There are always going to be better and more efficient ways to run my business.  I stay on top of the latest trends and models and change easily and effortlessly as I see fit.”  Say this every time you feel yourself being too stubborn about a process or approach in your business.  Over time, you’ll start to become what you speak.

2) Get an accountability partner.  Find a mentor who’s attained the level of success you want and ask that person to be your accountability partner, the person who can see when you’re falling prey to a limiting belief and call you out on it.  EVERY entrepreneur needs a mentor.  Whether it’s a mastermind group, an entrepreneurship coaching program, or a 1:1 mentor who’s as successful (as an entrepreneur) as you plan to be, you need guidance so you can take massive action without also making massive mistakes.  When you have a mentor, you can avoid making mistakes that your mentor made.  You can also seek advice and get an objective perspective on making changes that you wouldn’t have access to if you were going it alone.  A mentor is critical to your success.  If you don’t have one, make this you NEXT step, period.

Are You There YET? How to Answer that Question… (Read Time: 2 min.)

Grow faster 2Every entrepreneur, at some point or another, gets THE question: “Are you there YET?”

Maybe others don’t say in quite that way but, whether it’s your third day in business or your third year in business, at some point, the people closest to you (the ones who are most attached to the goal and, oftentimes, most ignorant of the work it takes to get to the goal), will ask you THE question… and it can take on one of many forms, like:

“Are you making any money from your best yet?”

“How long before you start making money and pay back the loan you owe me?”

“You spend so much time working on the business.  When are you going to start seeing a return?”

“I don’t know… You’ve been at this a long time.  What if it doesn’t work?”

I’m sure you could add at least ten more variations to the mix.

At the end of the day, there may be people in your inner circle who simply don’t get the entrepreneurial journey but think they know a lot about entrepreneurial success (they read Fast Company, Entrepreneur, and Success Magazine).

Why You’re Not Blogging Consistently and How to Stay The Course (Read Time: 4 min.)

Buffer 18For the last 3 months, I have been AWFUL at blog posting.  Between launching my new podcast, She Runs The Show, and writing 1 Kindle eBook a week AND launching a new 5 week online course, things have been CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!  But it doesn’t change the fact that I love to write, I love to share, and blogging is a passion of mine.

So I had to have a Get-It-Together-Talk with myself and evaluate A- Why I wasn’t blogging consistently (or at all), B- What it was going to take for me to get back to a blogging schedule and C- What strategies I needed to put into place to ensure that I stick to my blogging schedule (no whining, complaining, or excuses allowed).

And that’s what we’re going to cover in this blog post.

1) The 3 reasons why consistent blogging doesn’t happen

2) How to spend less than 5 minutes creating a blogging schedule

3) How to produce valuable content in the least amount of time possible

THE 3 REASONS CONSISTENT BLOGGING DOESN’T HAPPEN: 

Reason #1: Your day isn’t planned in advance and you allow time to run you instead of you running your time.

This happens to me EVERY time I don’t plan out my week in advance…and not just in the area of blogging.  If I don’t schedule out my workouts (NOTE TO SELF: book your spin bike for the week so your slot isn’t taken), prep my meals for the week, and set up my calendar to reflect where I’m supposed to be when, I’m screwed.  What winds up happening, from there, is a whole bunch of “stuff” that never has much of a rhyme or reason and never turns into massive success by the end of the week.  That doesn’t work if your goal is to build something amazing in your life.

Reason #2: Your blogging time (although it might be on your calendar) isn’t a NON-NEGOTIABLE use of your time.

Ever have a 5 minute Facebook excursion turn into a 1 hour FB time suck… and then wonder why you don’t have enough time to blog?  Yup, me too… What I’m starting to realize is that when I blog, I need to put WHOLE mind into PRESENT action.  Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook cannot be up on a tab of my computer while I’m writing a post.  My phone can’t be zinging and dinging with new updates as I’m writing this post (NOTE TO SELF: turn your Samsung face down- check!).  All of these things are distractions that can lure you away from doing something consistently and persistently that you “say” is important to your business.  At the end of the day, it’s not about what we “say” we’ll do; it’s about what we actually do…

REASON #3: You didn’t create a content calendar in advance.

In December, I spent 4 or 5 hours researching topics, blog titles and generating blog topic ideas which lead to a 9 page (front and back) listing of EVERY blog post I’m going to write in 2015.  If I hadn’t spent the time to develop a content calendar (which I still need to put in a Google spreadsheet), it would take me hours to research AND write each blog post.  Having a content calendar (whether it’s on paper like mine or on a Google doc or in Excel) is critical to being able to focus on efficient, effective blog writing.

HOW TO SPEND LESS THAN 5 MINUTES CREATING A BLOGGING CALENDAR: 

For those of us who are prone to over-thinking things, here’s an easy way to create a blogging calendar:

  • Pick 2-3 days a week that you’ll blog (for me, it’s Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday- I’ve found that Mondays are way too hectic with the podcast to even thinking about blogging)
  • Open your calendar (I have both an actual calendar and Google calendar) and block out a recurrent, weekly 30 minute appointment for those days
  • Set up reminders for each blogging appointment that goes to your phone and to your email (and pops up on your computer)
  • Follow it!  That’s it!

HOW TO PRODUCE VALUABLE CONTENT IN THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME POSSIBLE: 

  1. Check out the top 3 blogs in your content area and see what their top 50 posts are (topics, headlines, etc.).  Examples like Mind Body Green, The Daily Love, and Entrepreneur come to my mind when I think about my niche.
  2. Set up Google alerts for your subject matter so that you receive the latest articles and news right in your inbox. Here’s an article on how to set up a Google alert: https://support.google.com/alerts/answer/4815696?hl=en
  3. Pull from your own life experiences and provide lessons so people can learn from your mistakes.
  4. Find the loopholes in your industry and write about them (What aren’t the leaders in your industry saying that needs to be said?  Maybe it’s time you said it!)

At the end of the day, these are the things that I’m MAKING myself implement so I can blog more consistently.
